The SalfTrans 25th Anniversary Conference
A translators' guide to the EC Machinery Directive and other safety standards

2013 marked Salford Translations Ltd's 25th anniversary (the company was founded in Manchester in 1988). And to mark the occasion, we organised a special one-day translation conference in Stockport on 10th December 2013.

Our 25th anniversary conference gave us an opportunity to bring our translator team together for a day of celebration and of professional development.

Morning session - MemoQ training for advanced users

During the morning, we updated our translators on the latest developments with specialist translation memory tools, and in particular with MemoQ (our translation memory tool of choice).

Afternoon session - A translators' guide to the EC Machinery Directive and other safety standards

The afternoon's training revolved around industrial safety, with a presentation on the European Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) and on other safety regulations (such as IEC 61508) applicable to functional safety of industrial processes and control systems, which are two of the key areas that we translate. The speaker was an expert in engineering safety systems from our friends at Amtri Veritas, a specialist engineering consultancy firm based in Macclesfield.

  • An introduction to the Machinery Directive
  • Content of the Machinery Directive
  • What is the difference between a Declaration of Conformity and a Declaration of Incorporation?
  • What are the main points to include in these Declarations, both in terms of content and in each language?
  • Risk assessment: An overview (including Safety Integrity Levels, SIL)
  • What do the key safety standards look like in German, French and Dutch?
  • Translation requirements under the revised Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC ("Original instructions", "Originalanleitung" and "Translation of the original instructions")
